Infosys, India’s second-largest IT services company, has dismissed an additional 195 trainees from its Mysuru campus following internal assessment failures.
This marks the fourth round of exits at the company since February 2025, bringing the total number of affected trainees to approximately 800.
While the layoffs have raised concerns, Infosys is offering alternative career paths, including free upskilling programs through UpGrad and NIIT, to help trainees transition into new roles.
Infosys Trainee Layoffs: Background and Reasons for Termination
The latest round of terminations follows a structured internal assessment process, where trainees were required to meet qualifying criteria in the Generic Foundation Training Program.
Despite additional preparation time, doubt-clearing sessions, and multiple mock assessments, some trainees failed to meet the required standards.
As a result, Infosys informed them via email that they would not be able to continue their apprenticeship program.
The company had previously terminated 240 trainees on April 18, 300 trainees in February, and 30-35 trainees in March under similar circumstances.
Infosys maintains that these exits are not layoffs but rather a consequence of assessment failures, as trainees were not considered full-time employees.
Upskilling and Career Transition Support to Laid Off Trainees at Infosys
Infosys is providing affected trainees with free training programs to help them transition into new roles.
The company has partnered with UpGrad for BPM (Business Process Management) training and NIIT for IT training.
So far, 250 trainees have enrolled in upskilling programs, while 150 have registered for outplacement services.
Additionally, Infosys is offering:
- 12 weeks of training for potential roles in Infosys BPM.
- Sponsored training for those opting for BPM courses.
- One-month ex-gratia payment along with a relieving letter.
- Transport arrangements from Mysuru to Bangalore and travel allowances for those returning to their hometowns.
- Temporary accommodation at the Employee Care Centre in Mysuru until departure.
Regulatory Clearance and Industry Context
The Karnataka Labour Department investigated the matter and cleared Infosys of any labour law violations related to the trainee exits.
Officials stated that since the trainees were not regular employees, labour laws governing layoffs did not apply.
The department’s findings were based on documentary evidence collected during campus inspections.
Infosys’ decision comes amid a subdued demand environment in the IT sector.
The company has forecast 0% to 3% revenue growth for the current fiscal year, reflecting continued uncertainty in its core markets.
Other IT firms, including TCS, Wipro, and HCL Tech, have also reported cautious hiring trends.
