Pinterest has reportedly terminated two software engineers following an internal investigation into the creation of a custom “layoff tracker.”

The tool was developed by employees to monitor job cuts after the company announced a major restructuring plan. This incident has sparked a heated debate regarding workplace transparency and the boundaries of internal data usage.

The Conflict Over Internal Data at Pinterest

The terminations occurred after Pinterest discovered that the engineers had written custom scripts to aggregate data about employee departures.

The company alleges that these scripts improperly accessed confidential internal information to identify the names and locations of dismissed workers.

According to a Pinterest spokesperson, this action constituted a “clear violation” of company policy and a breach of former colleagues’ privacy.

Pinterest CEO Warns Against “Obstructionism”

In a company-wide meeting, Pinterest CEO Bill Ready addressed the firings directly.

While he stated that “healthy debate and dissent are expected,” he drew a sharp line at what he described as “obstructionist” behavior.

Ready urged employees who disagree with the company’s mission or direction to consider seeking employment elsewhere, emphasizing that the firm is at a “critical moment” in its transition toward an AI-forward strategy.

Rising Tensions Amid AI Pivot

The layoffs and subsequent firings come as Pinterest undergoes a significant shift, cutting approximately 15% of its workforce—roughly 700 roles—to reallocate resources toward artificial intelligence.

Employees have expressed frustration over a lack of transparency regarding which teams are being impacted.

While management maintains that withholding specific names protects individual privacy, staff members argue that the information is necessary to understand the changing organizational structure.

The Industry-Wide “Tracker” Culture

Industry analysts note that “layoff tracking” has become a common practice in the tech sector. This often unofficial activity occurs during periods of volatility.

Engineers frequently use their technical skills to query internal directories or monitor messaging platforms like Slack for deactivated accounts.

Pinterest’s decisive action against these engineers signals a tightening of corporate control over internal data.

It also indicates a lower tolerance for employee-led transparency initiatives.
