Vedanta Limited has announced the successful integration of 75 transgender employees across its global operations.

Released ahead of the International Transgender Day of Visibility 2026, the report highlights a strategic shift from symbolic hiring to the full-scale inclusion of transgender professionals in mainstream technical and corporate roles.

Mainstreaming Inclusion in Heavy Industry

Historically, heavy industries like mining and oil and gas have been seen as traditional bastions.

Vedanta is breaking this mold by deploying transgender talent across its powerhouse subsidiaries, including Vedanta Aluminium, Hindustan Zinc, Sesa Goa, FACOR, and Cairn Oil & Gas.

Unlike limited diversity initiatives that restrict marginalized groups to support staff, Vedanta’s cohort is active in high-impact functions.

These include asset integrity, finance, commercial logistics, CSR, and core plant operations.

The company’s “ZINCLUSION” initiative at Hindustan Zinc has been particularly noted for fostering a culture where identity and professional expertise are equally valued.

Vedanta Limited’s Comprehensive Policy Frameworks and Support

To ensure long-term retention, Vedanta has moved beyond recruitment to address deep-seated structural and social barriers.

Key pillars of their inclusion framework include:

  • Gender Affirmation Support: Financial assistance of up to ₹2 lakh and 30 days of dedicated leave for transition-related medical procedures.
  • Housing and Infrastructure: Recognizing the social stigma in the rental market, Vedanta provides company-owned housing and has installed gender-neutral washrooms across all sites.
  • Education and Mentorship: Grants of up to ₹1 lakh for higher education and a “structured buddy program” to assist with workplace navigation.

Strategic Partnerships for Social Change

The conglomerate has collaborated with specialized NGOs like Periferry and the National Network for Transgender Persons (NNTP) to streamline documentation challenges and sensitive outreach.

Vedanta is conducting sensitization programs for business partners and local communities.

This effort creates an inclusive ecosystem that extends beyond the office walls.

This initiative reflects a broader movement within the Indian HR fraternity toward “Human-Centric” industrial models.

It ensures that safety, dignity, and career progression are accessible to all, regardless of gender identity.
