SpiceJet is navigating a high-stakes legal and financial crossroads. As of April 9, 2026, the airline is under intense judicial pressure following a final four-week ultimatum from the Delhi High Court.

The court has ordered the carrier to deposit ₹144.5 crore in cash to settle its long-standing dispute with Kalanithi Maran and KAL Airways, rejecting the airline’s proposal to offer property as security.

SpiceJet Restructuring and Workforce Rationalization

To manage its mounting liabilities and stabilize its balance sheet, SpiceJet has implemented a rigorous “manpower rationalization” strategy.

This initiative, part of its broader “SpiceJet 3.0” turnaround plan, is expected to generate annual savings of approximately ₹100 crore

While the airline has already reduced its headcount to around 6,484 employees(down from over 8,000 in previous years), these measures are described by management as essential for long-term profitable growth.

A Multi-Front Funding Push

The airline is currently executing a complex, multi-tranche fundraising strategy to secure its future:

  • Tranche 1: The company has already infused ₹744 crore and is awaiting regulatory approval for additional subscriptions.
  • Future Infusion: Process is underway to raise an additional ₹1,500 crore through a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP), for which it already holds shareholder approval.
  • Debt Reduction: In a major victory for its balance sheet, the carrier recently cleared its $24 million debt to Credit Suisse and restructured ₹442 crore in liabilities with Carlyle Aviation Partners.

Fleet Revival and Expansion Plans

Despite the financial strain, SpiceJet is aggressively working to restore its operational scale.

The airline aims to unground 10 aircraft by the end of April 2026 to capture peak travel demand

With a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for 10 additional aircraft, the carrier plans to more than double its capacity this year, targeting 220 crore Available Seat Kilometres by the Winter 2026 schedule.
