India’s renewable energy sector is set to witness a significant surge in hiring during FY25, as demand for skilled professionals continues to rise.
According to a comprehensive study conducted by TeamLease Services, a leading staffing and workforce solutions provider, employment in the renewable energy industry is projected to grow by 18.9% in FY25.
This follows a remarkable 23.7% growth in FY24, showcasing the rapid transformation and workforce dynamics of the sector.
The expansion aligns with India’s ambitious renewable energy target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
Key Hiring Trends in the Renewable Energy Sector
TeamLease Services has identified several key employment trends driving the renewable energy industry’s workforce transformation:
- Specialized Skill Demand: The sector has a growing requirement for professionals skilled in engineering, project management, data analytics, and sustainable energy solutions.
- In-Demand Roles: Positions such as solar panel installers, energy auditors, operational support professionals, and solar PV technicians are among the most sought-after.
- Technology-Driven Opportunities: The adoption of digital innovations in solar, wind, and hybrid energy systems is creating new job opportunities in tech-focused roles, including storage operators and waste management specialists.
Workforce Demographics and Skill Gaps
The renewable energy workforce is youth-driven, with 26.9% of contractual employees aged between 26 and 30, and 27.9% in the 31–35 age bracket.
Experienced professionals are also well-represented, with 16% aged 35–40 and 18.2% aged above 40.
This balance highlights the industry’s focus on leveraging both innovation from young talent and expertise from seasoned professionals.
Educational qualifications play a crucial role in shaping the workforce.
In FY24, 44.1% of contractual employees held ITI or diploma certifications, while 28.9% were graduates and 4.1% were postgraduates.
The data underscores the sector’s reliance on vocational and skill-based training programs to meet its technical requirements.
Regional and Policy-Driven Growth in Renewable Energy Sector
States such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are at the forefront of India’s renewable energy production.
These states house a majority of the country’s solar power plants and are emerging as hotspots for employment generation.
Companies are increasingly investing in renewable energy projects in these regions, creating a robust demand for talent.
Government initiatives, including the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, National Green Hydrogen Mission, PM KUSUM Scheme, and the Solar PV Module PLI Scheme, have been instrumental in fostering investment and workforce expansion.
These policies aim to boost clean energy infrastructure, streamline operations, and drive skill development within the sector.
Challenges in Workforce Retention and Leadership Insights
Despite its rapid growth, the renewable energy industry faces challenges in workforce retention.
The study shows that 38.6% of contractual employees have less than one year of experience.
Additionally, only 11.8% of these employees stay with their organizations for more than four years.
Attrition rates fell from 39.1% in FY22 to 33.5% in FY24. However, they are expected to climb back to 39.4% in FY25.
This underscores the urgent need for structured retention strategies and workforce planning.
Subburathinam P, Chief Operating Officer of TeamLease Services, emphasized the sector’s potential and challenges: “India’s renewable energy sector is at a crucial inflection point, driven by strong government initiatives and rising corporate investments.”
He added, “The sector is set to boost jobs, with an increasing demand for specialized and technology-driven roles.”
“However, the challenge lies in addressing high attrition and skill gaps through structured workforce planning,” Subburathinam stated.
By integrating vocational training, digital skill development, and retention strategies, organizations can build a sustainable talent pipeline.”
