Remote work is gaining acceptance worldwide although the adoption of the work format mandates the adoption of specific measures and training. 

Remote work culture is on the rise. There are multiple benefits that this work model brings to the table. Allowing employees to “work from anywhere” offers companies access to a global talent pool.

The working model also brings greater flexibility and employee satisfaction, enabling firms to remain competitive in the long run. Remote work also helps companies catalyse innovation as employees from across the globe bring their unique perspectives and foster a culture of coordination and collaboration among them.

  • Develop Infrastructure: Investing in a robust IT infrastructure is a prerequisite for collaborating successfully across geographical boundaries. Communication tools, IoT networks, and cloud-based platforms are essential for remote working and must get a priority budget earmarked for them. It is also mandatory to invest in cybersecurity to keep data, processes, and systems safe from the prying eyes of hackers. Firms can also leverage emerging models such as SaaS to derive better efficiencies from their remote work models. 
  • Establish Parameters: With employees scattered around the globe, having clarity about roles and responsibilities can make a decisive difference in their performance. Each employee must get clear communication about their individual as well as team targets. This will help keep the performance optimum by bringing clarity to standards and expectations. Further, any gap between the actual and the desired performance should be communicated to remote workers so that any deviation can be corrected in a smooth and streamlined manner. 
  • Fostering Culture: Building, developing, and fostering the team culture is crucially important – more so in the case of remote work format. As employees in remote work lack in-person meetings, extra efforts have to be made to create a sense of belongingness among the team members. Events like virtual social meetings and cultural exchanges are excellent for building team spirit. Managers also need to conduct check-ins with employees to discuss not only their performance but also the issues they face with the company’s culture, their teammates, etc. 
  • Two-way Communication: Open and transparent communication is the key to driving synergy, growth, and business profitability. Especially in remote work settings, employees’ ability to express themselves without any fear of repercussion is of strategic importance. While regular meetings and performance updates are effective in serving their purposes, employees must get access to confidential platforms where they can talk anonymously and put their grouses across to the top management. 
  • Training and Development: Remote work comes with its unique set of challenges and therefore, requires specific training and development programmes. By equipping both team members and their managers with remote working skills, a lot of issues can be resolved proactively. Especially training workers on how to collaborate across different time zones and complying with country-specific data norms are crucially important. Remember, distributed teams are positioned uniquely and to make the most out of them, specialised training is something that firms can’t do away with. 

Remote work offers a host of benefits to companies. From cost savings to enhanced performance and superior satisfaction, work from anywhere model offers it all. That said, firms also need to be sensitive towards the challenges that remote work brings in.

Lack of personal touch, different cultural backgrounds, and broken communication are issues that need to be addressed head-on by firms. Summarily, remote work is increasingly becoming popular as its benefits outweigh the challenges by a considerable margin.
