HCLTech, one of India’s leading global technology firms, has appointed Amitabh Kant as an Independent Director effective September 8, 2025.

The announcement marks a strategic move by the company to deepen its governance expertise and align its growth trajectory with evolving global priorities.

Amitabh’s appointment was approved by the Board and recommended by the Nomination & Remuneration Committee.

His five-year term will run until September 7, 2030.

Amitabh Kant, a former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, brings decades of experience in public policy, institutional reform, and international diplomacy.

Most recently, he served as India’s G20 Sherpa during the country’s presidency in 2022–2023, where he played a pivotal role in securing consensus on the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration—a landmark agreement addressing global growth, climate finance, digital infrastructure, and geopolitical cooperation.

A Career Defined by Reform and Innovation

Amitabh’s career spans several high-impact roles in the Government of India.

As CEO of NITI Aayog for over six years, he led transformative initiatives such as the Aspirational Districts Program, which aimed to uplift underdeveloped regions through data-driven governance and competitive benchmarking.

His tenure was marked by a focus on inclusive development and institutional modernization.

Earlier, Amitabh headed the Department for Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), served as CEO of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (DMICDC), and held the post of Secretary, Tourism for the Government of Kerala.

His work in Kerala led to the creation of the iconic ‘God’s Own Country’ campaign, which revitalized the state’s tourism sector and laid the foundation for the national ‘Incredible India’ initiative.

He has also been instrumental in launching and steering key national programs such as Startup India, Make in India, Ease of Doing Business reforms, and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes.

Amitabh Kant’s contributions have earned him international recognition.

He was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by the Government of Japan in 2023, the Sir Edmund Hillary Fellowship by the Prime Minister of New Zealand, and the One Globe Award for leadership in transforming governance.

He is also a Chevening Scholar and has authored six books and numerous articles on policy and development.

Board Endorsements Signal Strategic Alignment

Welcoming Amitabh to the Board, HCLTech Chairperson Roshni Nadar Malhotra stated, “His rich experience in building public sector institutions and contribution to India’s reforms will offer immense insights towards shaping HCLTech’s growth strategy”.

C. Vijayakumar, CEO & Managing Director of HCLTech, emphasized the timing of the appointment: “Amitabh Kant joins us at a pivotal moment in our journey as well as within the industry.”

He added, “His thought leadership and long-term thinking will be invaluable in shaping our strategy. Amitabh shares our values and our ambition, and I look forward to his counsel as we execute our strategic plans”.

In response, Amitabh expressed his enthusiasm for the role, saying, “HCLTech is among the finest corporate institutions in India.

He added, “I am pleased to be part of its growth journey and look forward to working with the Board”.
