Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline for Universal Account Number (UAN) activation under the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme to June 30, 2025.
This extension provides additional time for employees to activate their UAN and link it with Aadhaar and their bank accounts, ensuring access to EPF benefits and financial incentives.
The move will benefit thousands of workers, particularly those in the unorganized and contractual sectors, whose UANs remain inactive.
Why UAN Activation Matters
The UAN is a 12-digit unique identification number assigned to employees by EPFO, allowing them to:
- Manage their EPF accounts online.
- Withdraw funds digitally.
- Check EPF balance and update contact details.
For employees enrolled under the ELI Scheme, UAN activation is mandatory to receive benefits such as life insurance coverage, pension eligibility, and provident fund withdrawals.
The scheme, introduced in Budget 2024-25, aims to promote formal employment by encouraging companies to hire fresh graduates.
Steps to Activate UAN
Employees can activate their UAN online through the EPFO Member Sewa portal by following these steps:
- Visit the EPFO Member Portal.
- Click on ‘Activate UAN’ under ‘Important Links’.
- Enter UAN, Aadhaar number, date of birth, and mobile number linked with Aadhaar.
- Verify details through an OTP sent to the registered mobile number.
- Once verified, the UAN is activated.
Additionally, employees must ensure their UAN is linked with Aadhaar and a valid bank account to enable direct benefit transfers.
Impact of the Deadline Extension
The extension of the UAN activation deadline is expected to:
- Provide relief to employees who have not yet completed the process.
- Encourage more workers to enroll in the EPF system, strengthening financial security.
- Ensure seamless access to benefits under the ELI Scheme.
EPFO has urged employers to launch special drives and hold activation camps to achieve 100% UAN activation and Aadhaar seeding before the deadline.
EPFO UAN Activation Deadline Extension: Future Implications
With the June 30, 2025 deadline, EPFO aims to streamline employee benefits, ensuring that all eligible workers can access life insurance, pension, and provident fund services.
The organization has also emphasized the importance of digital financial inclusion, making it easier for employees to manage their EPF accounts online.
