Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) now generates between 20% and 30% of the company’s code, marking a significant shift in software development.

Speaking at Meta’s LlamaCon AI developer conference, Satya emphasized that AI-powered tools are increasingly being used for code generation, quality assurance, and automation.

This revelation underscores the growing role of AI in streamlining software engineering, reducing manual coding efforts, and enhancing efficiency across Microsoft’s development ecosystem.

AI’s Expanding Role in Microsoft Codebase

During his conversation with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Satya explained that AI-generated code is steadily increasing, particularly in languages like Python, which has shown strong AI-assisted development capabilities.

However, he acknowledged that AI’s effectiveness varies across programming languages, with C++ posing greater challenges compared to C# and Python.

Microsoft has been integrating AI into its development processes through tools like GitHub Copilot, which assists developers by suggesting code snippets, automating repetitive tasks, and improving debugging efficiency.

Industry-Wide AI Adoption in Software Development

Microsoft is not alone in embracing AI-driven coding. Other tech giants, including Google, Meta, and Shopify, are also leveraging AI to automate software development4.

  • Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that over 25% of new code at Google is AI-generated.
  • Meta aims to have AI write 50% of its code by 2026, according to Zuckerberg.
  • Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke has mandated that teams must justify why AI cannot perform a task before requesting additional hires.

These developments indicate a broader industry trend where AI is reshaping traditional coding practices, making software development faster, more efficient, and accessible to non-programmers.

AI Revolution at Microsoft: The Future of AI in Software Engineering

Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott has predicted that AI will produce 95% of all code within the next five years, fundamentally altering the role of human developers.

While AI-driven coding enhances productivity, Kevin emphasized that human oversight remains crucial, ensuring that AI-generated code aligns with security, functionality, and ethical standards.

Satya likened AI’s impact on coding to electricity’s role in industrial transformation, stating that AI will raise the overall skill level of developers and make coding more accessible to a broader audience.
