Multinational technology giant Google is all set to build its largest campus outside its Mountain View headquarters in the US. Spread over a 7.3 acre site that the company acquired at Gachibowli in 2019.

Hyderabad’s campus is expected to be ready in a couple of years.

The campus will house a whopping 3.3 million square feet building. The company also unveiled the design of the campus coming up at the 7.3-acre site it acquired in 2019.

The campus was originally planned as a 2 million square facility with an investment of Rs 1,000 crore. Google plans to double its workforce in Hyderabad, which has been its hub for technical support, Google Adwords, Gmail, Google docs, Google mapping, and YouTube support, among other things.

The company currently operates out of a leased facility in Kondapur in Hyderabad and employs about 7,000 employees.

Rama Rao, who unveiled the building design at a ceremony held on site said, “I am pleased that Google is deepening its roots in Hyderabad through this landmark building which incorporates sustainability into its design, keeping in mind Hyderabad’s large and future-focused talent pool.”

Google has signed an MoU with the Telangana government to support and accelerate its vision of leveraging technology for sustainable economic development and inclusive social development.

An agreement was signed between the Telangana government and Google in 2015 when K.T. Rama Rao visited the company headquarters in California. The minister said that Google has been working with the Telangana government since 2017.

He said, “Our vision of a Digital Telangana and furthering our mutual aim of making every citizen digitally empowered. Our previous MoUs with Google have resulted in some great initiatives that have positively affected citizens from all walks of life. This time we are focusing on making a step-change in communities such as youth, women, and students and in citizen services.”

The building prioritizes sustainability and energy efficiency throughout its design. Upon commissioning, it will offer a highly-skilled tech workforce a healthy, collaborative workplace that is both resilient and adaptable, designed to serve the city for years to come, Google said.

Under this new initiative, Google will collaborate with the government through its various arms to extend scholarships for Google Career Certificates to Telangana’s youth, support women entrepreneurs through digital, business, and financial skills training, and strengthen the government’s school modernization efforts with digital teaching and learning tools and solutions.

Calling Hyderabad the ‘home’ which is very special for the entire team of Google, Sanjay Gupta said the MoU has only made it a ‘bigger home,’ so that the company’s belief in making the Internet safer for a billion Indians, to which it stood for, could be achieved.

As part of the joint effort, the company will also support the Telangana government’s efforts to improve public transportation and the use of digital technologies in agriculture.
