India’s green economy is expanding rapidly, with projections indicating the creation of 7.29 million jobs by FY28 and 35 million by 2047.

A recent report by NLB Services highlights the accelerating demand for sustainability-focused roles, driven by advancements in renewable energy, electric vehicles (EVs), sustainable infrastructure, and climate technology.

The report also estimates that India’s green economy will reach $1 trillion by 2030 and $15 trillion by 2070, reinforcing the country’s commitment to environmental sustainability and economic growth.

The Rise of Green Jobs in India

These jobs, once considered niche roles, have now become mainstream opportunities across multiple industries.

According to Sachin Alug, CEO of NLB Services, the integration of AI, IoT, blockchain, GIS, and data-driven tools is shaping new-age green careers, requiring professionals to possess both sustainability expertise and digital fluency.

Industries are investing heavily in green technology, not only to reduce carbon footprints but also to build a skilled workforce capable of meeting the rising demand.

Companies are shifting their hiring strategies, prioritizing practical skills over traditional degrees.

Many organizations are also collaborating with colleges and universities to equip students with sustainability-related competencies.

Sector-Wise Growth in Green Jobs

The report highlights several key sectors driving job creation:

  • Renewable Energy: Solar and wind energy projects are expected to generate millions of jobs, particularly in installation, maintenance, and research.
  • Electric Vehicles (EVs): The EV sector is witnessing rapid expansion, with demand for battery engineers, charging infrastructure specialists, and sustainable mobility experts.
  • Green Construction: Sustainable building practices are fueling demand for eco-friendly architects, engineers, and urban planners.
  • Waste Management & Recycling: The push for circular economy models is increasing the need for waste management professionals and recycling specialists.
  • Sustainable Textiles: The fashion industry is shifting toward eco-friendly production, creating jobs in organic material sourcing and ethical manufacturing.

Regional Distribution of Green Jobs

While major cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi remain key hubs for such jobs, Tier II and Tier III cities are emerging as significant contributors.

Cities such as Jaipur, Indore, Visakhapatnam, Coimbatore, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, and Ahmedabad are expected to generate 35-40% of the projected 7.29 million jobs by FY28, driven by sustainable agriculture, logistics, and warehousing.

Future Outlook and Policy Support

The Indian government has been actively promoting green initiatives, including:

  • Incentives for renewable energy projects to accelerate job creation.
  • Skill development programs focused on sustainability and climate technology.
  • Public-private partnerships to enhance green workforce training.

With green job roles expanding across ESG analytics, climate data analysis, and green technology, experts predict a 20-30% annual rise in demand for professionals in these fields.
