India’s largest IT services provider company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has ended the hybrid work policy and asked its employees to work from the office 5 days a week from October 1, 2023 onwards.

Until October 1, employees were attending the office for three days a week.

The company has ended the hybrid work model in internal communication and said, “As communicated by CEO and chief human resources officer (CHRO) in various townhalls, it is mandatory for all associates to attend office on all the working days (5 days per week if there are no holidays) starting 1 October 2023.” CNBC-TV18 quoted the official mail to the employees of TCS on Sept 29, 2023.

This is a marked shift from TCS’ previous stance, which, since September 2022, has required employees to adhere to a roster and be in office three days a week. It had also warned employees of consequences if they did not adhere to this roster.

While announcing the Q2FY24 results, Milind Makkad, Global CHRO, TCS said, “We have hired a large number of workforce in last three years and they were working in Hybrid or Virtual mode, we strongly believe they need to come to work all days so that new workforce get integrated with a larger workforce of TCS. This is how only they will learn about TCS Values and Culture.”

“We will continue to assess our working models and evolve depending on what works best for our customers and employees.” he added.

It looks like TCS asked its employees to work from the office 5 days a week from October 1 but it’s not as strict communication as it was for 3 days a week, and the company will retain flexibility/hybrid policies and make exceptions wherever necessary.

However, other IT giants in India like; Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech, and others have not yet made it mandatory for their employees to work from the office.
