IT firms extend WFH by 03 months due to COVID-19 spike

COVID-19 cases are increasing across the country. Many IT and ITES companies especially in Bengaluru are extending the work from home (WFH) for their employees by 03 more months.

Government employees are also asking for work from home options and pointing out that they are at a higher risk since there is no restriction on the number of people visiting government offices.

Earlier in the month of December 2020, keeping the safety and well-being of employees as a top priority, IT firms had said WFH would be till March 31 and asked employees to return to work from April 1, but now the companies are sending out emails, asking staff not to visit offices, unless absolutely necessary.

Wipro had extended Work From Home (WFH) until Apr 4, 2021, earlier. 92% of Wipro employees currently work from home, 3% work from offices (WFO), and 5% work from our global customer locations. Other IT firms such as Infosys, TCS, had announced earlier that their employees will continue to work from home till March 2021.

A leading IT service management firm in east Bengaluru had earlier given the WFH option till March 31, but on Monday, employees received an email saying it has been extended by three more months

Goldman Sachs, an investment bank and financial services company in Bengaluru which had asked its employees to return to office from Wednesday, reversing moves has told them to continue to work from home as Covid-19 cases are increasing.

K S Viswanathan, Vice-President (Industry Initiatives), Nasscom, told TNIE that most of the companies had extended work from home till June and a few till September.

E-commerce giant Flipkart has extended the ‘work from home’ policy for its 12,000 employees till May 31, 2021, due to a surge in coronavirus pandemic.

Alphabet Inc’s Google had announced earlier that it will allow its employees to work from home until September 2021. For now, most companies have chosen to maintain status quo on WFH situation.
