In a major decision to boost job opportunities for the youth, the Punjab government has decided to reduce the retirement age of government employees from 60 to 58 years.

The announcement was made by Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Badal on 28th Feb, Friday, who informed the Assembly that the retirement age of government employees has been reduced. He presented a budget of Rs 1.54 lakh crore for fiscal 2020-21.

The retirement age of government employees has been reduced from 60 to 58 years. With this, we will be able to provide employment to three to four times the number of people who retire. We will also be able to get a more talented pool of young people to serve Punjab, Badal said while addressing media.

Presenting the fourth budget of the Captain Amarinder Singh-led Congress government in the state, Badal also announced a hike of Rs 4,000 crore in expenditure on salaries and pensions. He also announced a 6% dearness allowance for the employees, to be released on 1st March, 2020.

The pay commission report will be implemented and has been accounted for in the budget, he said.
