Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced a groundbreaking $3 billion investment in India to expand the company’s cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.

This ambitious plan, revealed during the Microsoft AI Tour in Bengaluru, is set to roll out over the next two years and aims to position Microsoft as a key player in India’s tech transformation.

Microsoft Expanding Cloud and AI Infrastructure

The investment will focus on building new data centres across India, enhancing Microsoft’s computing capabilities, and enabling cutting-edge AI solutions.

Satya emphasized the importance of this expansion, stating, “India is rapidly becoming a leader in AI innovation.”

He added, “These investments reaffirm our commitment to making India AI-first and ensuring that people and organizations across the country benefit broadly”.

A significant portion of the investment will be directed towards skilling initiatives, with Microsoft aiming to train 10 million people in AI skills by 2030.

The company’s ADVANTA (I)GE India programme has already trained over 2.4 million individuals, surpassing its initial target well ahead of schedule.

The next phase of the programme will focus on equitable access to AI education, with a particular emphasis on women and individuals from smaller cities and towns.

Fostering Innovation and Sustainability

Microsoft’s investment in India isn’t just about technology—it’s about doing it responsibly.

The company is prioritizing sustainability by designing data centres that consume zero water for cooling and operate on renewable energy.

Long-term partnerships with organizations like ReNew are a step towards achieving Microsoft’s goal of being carbon-negative by 2030.

Microsoft Partnerships and Collaborations

Microsoft is actively fostering a thriving AI and SaaS ecosystem in India through partnerships like the AI Innovation Network and SaaSBoomi.

The AI Innovation Network, launched by Microsoft Research Lab, focuses on turning research into practical business solutions.

Collaborations with digital natives, such as Physics Wallah, are helping to advance tools. These tools support industries ranging from education to healthcare.

The partnership with SaaSBoomi aims to bolster over 5,000 start-ups and 10,000 entrepreneurs, creating a ripple effect across the economy.

This initiative will also channel funding and resources into tier II cities, contributing to a trillion-dollar economy while nurturing innovation.
