Microsoft is advancing its vision for AI agents that collaborate across platforms and retain memory of past interactions.

Ahead of its Build 2025 developer conference, Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott outlined the company’s efforts to create an interoperable AI ecosystem, where agents from different companies can work together seamlessly and remember user interactions to improve efficiency.

Microsoft Agents and the Model Context Protocol (MCP)

Microsoft is backing the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard introduced by Google-backed Anthropic.

MCP aims to create an “agentic web”, similar to how hypertext protocols helped spread the internet in the 1990s.

Kevin emphasized that MCP will allow AI agents to:

  • Collaborate across different platforms, regardless of their creators.
  • Exchange information efficiently, enabling multi-agent workflows.
  • Enhance AI memory, making interactions more context-aware.

Microsoft AI Memory Enhancement: Structured Retrieval Augmentation

One of the biggest challenges in AI development is memory retention.

Kevin noted that most AI interactions today feel “transactional”, meaning agents forget previous conversations once a session ends.

To address this, Microsoft is developing Structured Retrieval Augmentation, a technique where AI agents:

  • Extract short, relevant snippets from each user interaction.
  • Create a roadmap of past discussions, improving context recall.
  • Reduce computing costs, making memory retention more scalable.

Kevin compared this approach to how biological brains process information, stating, “You don’t brute force everything in your head every time you need to solve a particular problem”.

Industry Implications and Future Outlook

Microsoft’s AI strategy aligns with a broader industry push for standardized AI interoperability.

The company’s adoption of Google’s Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol further strengthens its commitment to cross-platform AI collaboration.

With AI agents increasingly used for automation, customer support, and workflow management, Microsoft’s advancements could:

  • Improve enterprise AI adoption, making multi-agent systems more practical.
  • Enhance AI-driven productivity, reducing redundant tasks.
  • Set new standards for AI memory, making interactions more intuitive and personalized.
