Directorate of Information Technology, Electronics and Communications (DITEC), Government of Assam, has launched a statewide internship programme for engineering students.

The initiative, spearheaded by Ashwani Kumar, IAS, Director of DITEC, aims to provide hands-on exposure to real-world IT projects and foster a new generation of tech-savvy professionals within the state.

The programme is open to students pursuing B.Tech or equivalent degrees in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Technology from AICTE-recognised institutions across Assam.

DITEC Internship Programme Structure: Practical Learning at the Core

The internship will be conducted at DITEC’s headquarters in Guwahati, with a flexible duration of 4 to 8 weeks, depending on academic requirements.

Selected interns will work on live government IT projects, collaborating closely with senior officials and technical teams.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate issued by the Directorate, adding value to their academic and professional portfolios.

The programme is designed to immerse students in areas such as:

  • Digital governance
  • Public service delivery platforms
  • Emerging technologies and innovation ecosystems

Key Objectives: Building a Future-Ready Workforce

DITEC launched the internship initiative as part of a broader vision to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry demands.

According to DITEC, the programme is expected to:

  • Identify early talent through real-time evaluation of students’ skills and work ethic.
  • Promote innovation by welcoming fresh, unconventional thinking into government systems.
  • Retain local talent by offering meaningful opportunities within Assam.
  • Foster skill development aligned with current industry tools and technologies.
  • Enhance soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and structured reporting.

Empowering Underrepresented Students and Institutions

A notable feature of the programme is its emphasis on inclusivity and empowerment.

By offering exposure to students from rural or underrepresented backgrounds, DITEC aims to build confidence and broaden access to high-impact career pathways.

The initiative also seeks to elevate the reputation of Assam’s technical institutions through intern success stories and recognition.

Long-Term Vision: Strengthening Assam’s Tech Ecosystem

Beyond individual skill-building, the internship programme is part of Assam’s larger ambition to become a hub for technology and innovation.

By involving interns in key government digital initiatives at minimal cost, the programme supports:

  • Entrepreneurship and product design ecosystems
  • Government-academia collaboration
  • A culture of research and problem-solving

DITEC envisions this internship as a sustainable talent pipeline that will contribute to the state’s digital transformation and economic growth.
