Provident Fund Services Get a Digital Upgrade with EPFO 3.0

Union Labour and Employment Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya has announced a series of reforms under the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).

The most notable among them is the introduction of a single login system for EPFO members, enabling access to all key services through one unified portal.

Previously, members had to navigate multiple login interfaces to check balances, file claims, or access documents, often facing delays and password synchronization issues.

The new system is expected to reduce grievances, improve transparency, and enhance satisfaction among EPFO’s vast subscriber base.

EPFO 3.0 ‘Passbook Lite’ Offers Simplified View of PF Contributions

As part of the EPFO 3.0 reform package, the organisation has launched ‘Passbook Lite’—a simplified version of the traditional PF passbook.

Available directly on the member portal, Passbook Lite provides a quick summary of contributions, withdrawals, and current balances without requiring access to the older, more detailed portal.

This feature is designed to address frequent complaints from users who struggled to view their balances due to login errors or system delays.

The detailed graphical passbook will still be available on the legacy portal for those who need deeper insights.

Annexure K Now Available Online for Seamless PF Transfers

EPFO has also digitized access to Annexure K, a transfer certificate that documents the movement of Provident Fund accounts when employees change jobs.

Previously, members had to request this certificate manually, often leading to delays and incomplete records.

With the new update, members can download Annexure K directly from the portal. They can also track whether their service period and balance have been correctly updated.

This transparency is expected to improve trust in the system. It also helps ensure accurate calculations for pension benefits under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS).

Faster Settlements Through Rationalized Approval Hierarchy

Another key reform involves reducing the number of approvals required for claim settlements.

Earlier, PF transfers, withdrawals, advances, and refunds needed clearance from higher-level officers, which often led to bottlenecks.

Under the new structure, assistant PF commissioners and subordinate officers are empowered to approve claims, significantly speeding up the process.

This rationalized hierarchy is expected to make settlements smoother and more responsive to member needs.

EPFO officials have stated that the changes aim to make the organisation more agile and member-centric.

They emphasized this shift is essential as the subscriber base continues to grow.

EPFO Record Member Additions Reflect Growing Trust

The reforms come at a time when EPFO is witnessing record growth.

In June 2025 alone, the organisation added 21.89 lakh net new members—the highest since payroll tracking began in 2018.

Of these, 10.62 lakh were new subscribers, with over 60% belonging to the 18–25 age group.

This surge reflects both increased employment opportunities and heightened awareness of formal employee benefits.

The reforms are expected to further strengthen EPFO’s role in India’s social security framework.
