Last date for Aadhaar–PAN linking is 31 March, will it extend?

The PAN-Aadhaar linking is important. In terms of government processing, it helps to verify the identity of individuals filed by income tax returns.

Income Tax shared a tweet from its official Twitter handle saying, “Last date to link your PAN & Aadhaar is approaching soon!”

“As per IT Act,1961, it is mandatory for all PAN holders, who do not fall under the exempt category, to link their PAN with their Aadhaar before 31.3.23. From 1.4.23, the unlinked PAN shall become inoperative. Please link today!”, the tweet added.

The Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act provides that every individual who has been allotted a Permanent Account Number (PAN) as on the 1st day of July 2017, and who is eligible to obtain an Aadhaar number, shall intimate Aadhaar number in the prescribed form and manner.

In other words, such persons have to mandatorily link their Aadhaar and PAN before the prescribed date (31.03.2022 without fee payment and 31.03.2023 with prescribed fee payment).To know more about the info you can visit “https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/help/how-to-link-aadhaar”

Apart to check PAN-Aadhaar linking status online

  • Step 1: The linking person should go to the Income Tax e-filing portal.
  • Step 2: Click on “Quick Links” on the left side of the page, then select “Link Aadhaar Status”.
  • Step 3: Enter a 10-digit PAN number and a 12-digit Aadhaar number.
  • Step 4: Click on “View Link Aadhaar Status”.
  • Step 5: If your Aadhaar number appears, it means your PAN and Aadhaar cards are already linked else the Aadhaar card needs to be updated.

Additionally, the PAN-Aadhaar linkage will cause a penalty of Rs 1000 until March 31, 2023. Additionally, after that date, unlinked PANs will become inoperative.

In case the Aadhar is not linked follow the following steps:

  • Visit the Income Tax e-Filing portal homepage.
  • Click on “Link Aadhaar” in the Quick Links section.
  • Enter your PAN, and mobile number to receive an OTP. After OTP verification, it will be redirected to the e-Pay Tax page.
  • Post this you need to pay the penalty fees.
  • After paying the penalty fees you can link your Aadhaar number with PAN on the portal.

Will the last date be extended?

Today Evening on March 28, 2023, the last date to link PAN with Aadhaar has been extended to June 30, 2023. From 1st July, 2023, the unlinked PAN shall become inoperative with consequences.

The PAN can be made operative again in 30 days, upon intimation of Aadhaar to the prescribed authority after payment of fee of Rs. 1,000.
