Emotional Intelligence in High Tech World

While technology is both a bane and boon, if we use technology cautiously and consciously with good intent, it can do wonders. We have seen that with the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, Machine Learning (ML), Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality, it has done value additions in Healthcare, Manufacturing and other sectors. Robots allow for increased production and profit margin because they complete tasks faster.They are used to perform accurate surgery in tiny places and transport dangerous substances. With AI and Automation powered technologies, manufacturers can improve efficiency, fasten processes and even optimize complex operations.

Recently, I came across a snippet, happy to share it here, as I found it interesting:

“Technology will create its own class system. The poorest will have robots & impersonal tech to deal with. The middle class will have personalized tech. The rich will have human company.”

Rise in Automation and an increase in the use of Digital platforms at work in day to day job functioning is the evidence that we already depend heavily on technology. Increasing globalization and new technologies demand new modes of working and talent with new and diverse skills. To flourish in this environment, individuals must keep learning new skills and continue to upgrade themselves. 

As mentioned by Jack Ma, founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group, “To be a successful leader you need EQ, IQ and LQ…The quotient of love, which machines never have.” He also mentioned, “A machine does not have a heart, does not have soul, does not have a belief. Human being have the souls, have the belief, we are creative.”

Rather than encouraging humans to become more like machines, we should be building machines to support or assist mankind. As it says, “WILLS power should not overtake human WILL power” – likewise, technology or machines should not control us or we must not depend so much on technology.

WHY Emotional Intelligence is vital ?

If I say that I am making an attempt to see my image withinthe boiling water, you may assume that I have gone mad, however, will someone see his image in boiling, disturbed water?

Just like one can see the image only in tranquil water and not in hot boiling and bubbling water, similarly, an angry person is neither able to see anything or hear or think properly when he/she is angry. He is unaware of the consequences of his own karma and not able to hear the inner voice of conscientiousness.

Anger is like boiling water. Only when we are calm, is when we think well and decide what is right and what is wrong.

Human beings around the world have similar brain structure and use similar facial muscles to express basic emotions such as anger, happiness, sadness, fear, surprise and disgust.

A person can have different thoughts about the same situation. Different thoughts can then lead to different kinds of changes in (1) what your body is doing, (2) what you pay attention to and think about, and (3) how you want to act. When you notice these changes, you can use them to figure out what emotion you are feeling.

Situation 1: Feeling sad because you did not get invited to a party. You don’t feel like doing anything.

Another example: Situation 2, Feeling scared to give a presentation

Daniel Goleman’s model (1998) focuses on Emotional Intelligence (EI) as a wide array of competencies and skills that drive leadership performance, and consists of five areas:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Regulation
  • Social Skill
  • Empathy
  • Motivation

Self-Awareness: Tracking(1) how often you get angry, sad, unhappy, fearful, frustrated, disgusted, depressed, anxious, rude(2) the duration an emotion stays (3) the causes of emotions captured in an excel sheet and (4) understanding the pattern will help us understand our current state.

Self-Regulation: Another good reason to understand emotions is that it can help you figure out the healthier ways to respond to them. 

These help in managing ourselves better while improving on interpersonal skills and social skills.

The inner game or “performance equation” is simply stated as :

PERFORMANCE = POTENTIAL – INTERFERENCE

We have two areas that we can develop to increase our performance. Well, everything is choice.

  • we can choose to grow potential by expanding our comfort zone and stretching ourselves to learning zone and growth zone.
  • we can choose to reduce or overcome the internal obstacles that we may have such as fear, self-doubt, lapses in focus, anxiety, and limiting concepts or distortions.

Smart machines through advanced software or technologies will be able to detect problems, prevent failures, offer solutions, but it takes an emotionally intelligent person to encourage a team of people, manage tensions, boost morale, listen, influence, relate to others and celebrate with the team and more…..In this high-tech world and fast paced life, we will still need persons who can be called an emotional anchors to help you sail throughtoughtimes..
