Uber India lays Off 600 employees amid slowdown, a 25% of total workforce 2,400 in the country

Uber India on Tuesday, 26 May, announced to lay off around 600 full-time employees due to the impact of the coronavirus crisis, a week after Ola slashed its workforce. The affected employees would be from across driver and rider support among other functions.

The move is part of a global restructuring plan announced earlier by Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi in view of dwindling fortunes amid Covid-19 lockdowns in several countries, including India.

The company said, the retrenched employees would be paid 10 to 12 weeks of salary, besides medical insurance coverage for the next six months and outplacement support. These staffers would also be allowed to retain their laptops and given the choice to hitch the Uber expertise listing.

Pradeep Parameswaran, President, Uber India, and South Asia said, “The impact of Covid-19 and the unpredictable nature of the recovery has left Uber India with no choice but to reduce the size of its workforce…600 people across driver and rider support, as well as other functions, are being impacted,”

“Right this moment is an extremely unhappy day for colleagues leaving the Uber household and all of us on the firm. …. I need to apologize to departing colleagues, and prolong my heartfelt because of them for his or her contributions to Uber and the riders and driver-partners we serve in India,” Parameswaran said.

Travel and hospital firms such as MakeMyTrip, Cleartrip, and Oyo have also cut several jobs or furloughed thousands of employees in recent months as their revenues drop significantly.
