Vineet Nayyar, former Vice-Chairman of Tech Mahindra passed away on May 16 at 85.

Sharing this devastating news of demise, CP Gurnani said on X, “Heartbreaking news. India has lost one of its finest leaders today. #VineetNayyar. Personally, it’s like losing the light that has led me for decades…He was a friend, philosopher, brother, guide & statesman par excellence. My heart and thoughts are with Reva and her family. #OmShanti

Nayyar began his career as a district magistrate before founding the state-owned Gas Authority of India. He then advanced to the World Bank, overseeing its infrastructure and energy divisions.

Impressed by Nayyar’s managerial skills, Shiv Nadar, founder and chairman of HCL Technologies Ltd, encouraged him to join the IT services sector.

Nayyar accepted a position at HCL, serving first as Managing Director of HCL Corp., then as Vice-Chairman of HCL Technologies, and eventually as the founder and CEO of HCL Perot Systems.

In 1996, Nayyar began his IT journey with HCL Perot Systems, a 50-50 joint venture between HCL Technologies and Perot Systems, serving as its founder and managing director.

His tenure was marked by a turbulent boardroom battle over control of the company, with Perot Systems even seeking his removal as chief executive due to differences in the company’s functioning.

Despite these challenges, Nayyar led the company to go public three years later in 1999 and remained at the helm until 2005.

He continued for two years after HCL sold its stake to Perot for ₹480 crore, which was then the biggest deal in Indian IT.

He also served as a Director on the Boards of Indian Oil Corporation, Great Eastern Shipping, Kotak Life Insurance, Business Standard Ltd, The Mahindra United World College of India, The Mahindra Holidays and Resorts India Ltd, and the Tech Mahindra Foundation.
