Cognizant, a global leader in IT services and consulting, has seen a significant rise in the return of former employees, often referred to as “boomerang employees.”

Over the past two years, the company has experienced a 40% increase in returnees, with more than 14,000 former employees rejoining its workforce.

This trend highlights Cognizant’s ability to create a work culture that employees are eager to return to, even after exploring opportunities elsewhere.

Boomerang employees are individuals who voluntarily leave a company and later return after working at other organizations.

This trend has gained momentum, particularly following the “Great Resignation” triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, where many professionals sought better opportunities but later experienced “new hire’s remorse” when those roles didn’t meet expectations.

Cognizant has effectively capitalized on this trend, positioning itself as a top choice for professionals seeking to return.

Cognizant’s Chief People Officer, Kathy Diaz, shared that the company has a pipeline of 20,000 former employees interested in rejoining. With a global workforce of 340,000, these returnees play a key role in the company’s recruitment strategy.

The influx of boomerang employees is seen as a testament to Cognizant’s entrepreneurial and innovative culture, which promotes career growth, social connections, and a sense of autonomy.

Additionally, its flexible work policies and diverse range of projects across industries contribute to its appeal.

Boomerang employees offer several strategic benefits. They bring new perspectives and ideas from their experiences at other companies while requiring minimal onboarding due to their familiarity with Cognizant’s operations and culture. By maintaining positive relationships with departing employees, Cognizant has built a culture of respect and loyalty, which helps attract talent back into the organization.

Cognizant’s success with boomerang employees offers a valuable lesson for other companies: treating departing employees with respect and leaving the door open for their return can build a strong alumni network and enhance an organization’s reputation as an employer of choice.
