Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has streamlined the process for updating employment details, allowing members to modify their date of joining and exit without requiring document uploads or employer approval.
This change aims to enhance user convenience, ensuring that EPF members can update their records seamlessly through the Unified Member Portal.
Previously, employees had to submit supporting documents and obtain employer certification to make changes to their employment history.
However, under the revised system, those with Aadhaar-validated Universal Account Numbers (UANs) can now update their details independently.
Who Can Update Their Employment History Without Documents?
EPFO has clarified that members whose UANs were generated after October 1, 2017, and are linked to Aadhaar, can update their date of joining and exit without uploading any documents.
These members can also modify other profile details, including:
- Name and date of birth
- Gender and nationality
- Father/mother’s name
- Marital status and spouse details
For members with older UANs (generated before October 1, 2017), updates may still require employer certification, as these accounts may not be Aadhaar-seeded.
How to Update Date of Exit on EPFO Portal
EPFO has introduced a self-service option for updating the date of exit, making the process more efficient.
Here’s how eligible members can update their exit date:
- Log in to the EPFO Unified Member Portal using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
- Navigate to the ‘Manage’ tab and select ‘Mark Exit’ (this option is available within two months of leaving the job).
- Choose your employer/company from the drop-down menu.
- Enter your exit date and tick the consent checkbox.
- Click on ‘Request OTP’, which will be sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
- Enter the OTP, click ‘Submit’, and confirm the alert prompt to complete the process.
Once you submit the request, the portal confirms the successful update of the date of exit with a notification.
Impact of the New Update
The revised process will:
- Reduce dependency on employers for employment history updates.
- Eliminate delays caused by document verification.
- Improve accuracy in EPF records, ensuring seamless transfers and withdrawals.
- Enhance accessibility for employees who have changed jobs or whose previous employers are unresponsive.
This move aligns with EPFO’s broader goal of digitizing services, making provident fund management more efficient and user-friendly.
