Lenovo is significantly expanding its footprint in India’s artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, announcing plans to add 1,000 highly skilled professionals to its AI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru by the end of FY26.
The move positions India not only as a key market but also as a global capability hub for Lenovo’s AI-led enterprise solutions, infrastructure, and consulting services.
The AI CoE, part of Lenovo’s Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG), currently houses around 400 employees and will scale to over 1,400 as the company accelerates its AI roadmap.
The Bengaluru facility will support global customers across sectors including manufacturing, BFSI, pharma, and cooperative banking, with a focus on consulting, deployment, and digital transformation frameworks.
Strategic Shift: From PC Maker to Full-Stack AI Provider
Lenovo’s expansion in India reflects a broader strategic pivot from its legacy PC business to a diversified technology portfolio.
Nearly 46% of the company’s $69 billion global revenue now comes from non-PC segments such as servers, infrastructure, and services.
The company has committed $1 billion globally between FY23 and FY25 to accelerate AI deployment, including investments in AI devices, infrastructure, and solutions.
Sumir Bhatia, President of Lenovo ISG Asia Pacific, emphasized India’s dual role: “India is absolutely one of our top markets in APAC.”
He added, “It is one of the fastest-growing regions for us. The AI CoE will not just be a centre with shiny hardware—it will provide access to labs, collaboration with technology partners, and end-to-end services from devices to infrastructure”.
Lenovo Bengaluru CoE: Consulting, Security, and Innovation at the Core
The Bengaluru AI CoE will serve as a multi-functional hub, integrating AI consulting, security operations, and network operations.
Lenovo plans to introduce a consulting-led framework to help clients design and execute AI strategies.
“What we have seen is a lot of customers require handholding,” said Amit Luthra, Managing Director, Lenovo ISG India.
“The CoE will focus on building a complete digital transformation framework—from mobility to devices to data centres”, he added.
The centre will also host an AI innovation lab where customers and partners can conduct proof-of-concept trials and test applications.
This collaborative model aims to make AI adoption more accessible and tailored to enterprise needs.
Manufacturing Push: Puducherry Facility Powers AI Infrastructure
Complementing the Bengaluru expansion is Lenovo’s manufacturing facility in Puducherry, which began producing enterprise AI rack servers and GPU units in late 2024.
The plant has the capacity to build 50,000 rack servers and 2,400 GPU servers annually, supporting both domestic and export markets.
These servers are equipped with Lenovo’s advanced 8-way GPU architecture, designed to meet growing AI workload demands.
Executives noted that the Puducherry plant was operational within 90 days of announcement, underscoring Lenovo’s agility in responding to infrastructure needs.
“Reliability and quality are non-negotiable, which is why we prefer in-house manufacturing,” Amit added.
Strong Financials and Early AI Adoption Fuel Growth at Lenovo
Lenovo’s India business reported $3.4 billion in revenue for FY25, marking a 67% year-on-year increase.
The company currently holds an 18.9% share of India’s PC market. In 2024, it manufactured 12 million devices domestically, valued at ₹18,000 crore.
In Q1 FY26, the ISG unit generated $4.3 billion in global revenue, marking a 36% year-on-year increase.
Notably, revenue from AI infrastructure more than doubled during the same period.
India’s unusually early adoption of AI across sectors has made it a strategic testing ground for Lenovo’s hybrid AI solutions.
“Typically, Indian customers are very skeptical in adopting something new. But when they see value, they scale fast,” Amit observed.
