Uber has announced plans to double its India tech workforce within the next three to five years, reinforcing the country’s role as a key development hub.

The announcement was made by Praveen Neppalli Naga, Global Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Mobility and Delivery, during his first visit to India since assuming the role.

The company’s engineering team currently employs 2,200 professionals, double the number from three years ago.

With India’s high-quality engineering talent, Uber aims to continue expanding at the same rate, focusing on AI-driven innovation, infrastructure development, and global product creation.

India’s Role in Global Tech Strategy of Uber

Uber’s India tech hub, established in 2014, has played a crucial role in developing global products and services.

Indian engineers are responsible for building:

  • Core Ads Platform for Delivery – Used in international markets.
  • Uber Earner – A specialized platform for drivers.
  • Uber Fleets – A SaaS solution for fleet providers to monitor vehicle utilization and driver performance.

Additionally, Uber’s engineering and technology teams are leveraging AI to enhance product experiences, including voice-enabled cab booking, which will first launch in the United States before expanding to other markets.

AI and Productivity: The Future of Engineering

Praveen emphasized that AI is transforming engineering productivity, allowing companies to build products faster.

  • What previously took six months can now be built in one month.
  • Three-year projects can now be completed within a year.
  • AI-driven automation is enabling engineers to focus on innovation rather than repetitive tasks.

Uber is also considering developing its own AI model, leveraging proprietary data to optimize pricing, matching algorithms, and personalization while ensuring privacy compliance.

Sustainability and EV Partnerships in India

Uber is actively expanding its sustainability initiatives in India, partnering with EV fleet operators such as:

  • Everest Fleet
  • Refex Green
  • Lithium Urban Technologies

The company was previously in talks with BluSmart for fleet onboarding, but recent reports indicate that discussions have ended.
