Atlassian, the global software company known for collaboration tools like Jira, Confluence, and Loom, has inaugurated a new Research and Development (R&D) centre in Bengaluru, significantly expanding its presence in India.

Spanning over 2 lakh square feet, the facility is four times larger than its previous office and is designed to accommodate more than 1,000 employees across two levels.

The move underscores India’s growing importance in Atlassian’s global operations.

Since entering the Indian market in 2018 with a modest team of 60, the company has scaled its workforce to over 2,500 employees, making India its largest employee base outside Australia and the United States.

India’s Role in Atlassian Global R&D Strategy

Nearly 75% of Atlassian’s India workforce is engaged in R&D roles, contributing to some of the company’s most strategic product development areas.

These include enterprise search, commerce, data residency, and customer success.

The Bengaluru centre is positioned as a cornerstone of Atlassian’s innovation engine, supporting both global product mandates and regional growth initiatives.

Rajeev Rajan, Chief Technology Officer at Atlassian, emphasized the significance of the expansion: “This new world-class R&D Centre is more than just a larger space—it’s a symbol of our investment in the future of work, distributed teamwork, and the exceptional talent we have here in India”.

Designed for Distributed Work: Team Anywhere in Action

The new facility has been purpose-built to support Atlassian’s “Team Anywhere” policy—a distributed-first approach that allows employees to work from wherever they are most effective.

The space includes:

  • 420 ergonomic workstations
  • 200 agile work points
  • 70 collaboration studios
  • 5 intentional team gathering rooms with seating for 250
  • A 280-seat café with a live kitchen and regional cuisine
  • Quiet zones, reflection rooms, parent rooms, and yoga/multi-use spaces
  • Recreational terraces and multipurpose outdoor sports courts for cricket, futsal, badminton, and pickleball
  • Over 10,800 live plants to enhance biophilic impact

Avani Prabhakar, Chief People Officer at Atlassian, noted, “Our new R&D Centre is a destination for the incredible talent we have in India—designed for how we work today and how we will work tomorrow”.

Cultural Identity and Sustainability Embedded in Design

The Bengaluru centre reflects Atlassian’s commitment to local culture and sustainability.

Designers drew inspiration from Indian cuisine and geography for the meeting rooms, and they used locally sourced materials and artworks by Indian artisans to give the space a distinctive identity.

These design choices aim to foster a sense of belonging and pride among employees, while also aligning with Atlassian’s global sustainability goals.

Atlassian Strengthening Asia-Pacific Presence

The Bengaluru expansion is part of Atlassian’s broader strategy to scale operations across the Asia-Pacific region.

Key clients such as NASA, Deutsche Bank, United Airlines, Rivian, and Bosch rely on Atlassian’s products.

To support global innovation and customer success, the company is investing in regional hubs.

India offers a deep talent pool and a mature tech ecosystem. Its growing importance in enterprise software development makes it a natural choice for global expansion.
