Karnataka IT- minister Priyank Kharge has expressed concern over the rising attrition rate among women in the Tech industry.

The Karnataka IT Minister Priyank Kharge’s recent Tweet said, “Some estimates put women employee attrition in IT companies at 30-40% since Dec 2022, while the industry average is currently 15%.”

“There is a 1-1.5 percentage point dip in the overall share of women in the tech workforce as well. Quite worrisome. Women logging out of Tech workforce is not good for us”, he added.

In a reply, a Tweet user said, “The attrition rate among women in technology companies is influenced by a variety of factors, including systemic issues and cultural dynamics.”

“There are some common factors that contribute to higher attrition rates, but post Covid there are only two common factors that contribute significantly. Work-life balance challenges: The tech industry is often associated with long working hours and high levels of job demands, which make it challenging for women who are juggling career aspirations with family responsibilities”, it added.

“The lack of supportive policies, such as flexible working hours or parental leave, further exacerbates the work-life balance issues and contributes to attrition. Hostile or unwelcoming work environments: Some technology companies have cultures that are unwelcoming or even hostile toward women”, it further added.

“This ranges from subtle biases and microaggressions to overt harassment or exclusionary behavior. These negative experiences contribute to high levels of stress, decreased job satisfaction, and ultimately, attrition”, the tweet concluded.

Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) said women attrition was higher than that of men likely due to the return-to-office policy.

To briefly explain why women are now denying to Work from the office:-

  • While working from the offices the employees are unable to save money for uncertainties.
  • Additionally, the employees have to spend heavily on traveling expenses and on children’s education in metro cities.
  • The cost of living increased by double in the office location.
  • Moreover, the employees are unable to bring their entire family to an office location.
  • Employees feel alone when they don’t have family in the metro cities and are unable to spend their time with their friends, family, and parents. Even while working from the office the employees are unable to take care of their parents.
  • Employee traveling time is a complete waste of time (Which they can use somewhere).
  • Employees have to take various debts to bear their daily expenses.
  • Housing rents or ownership is increasing day by day.
