Vedanta Group, a leading Indian conglomerate in critical minerals, oil and gas, and technology, has reported that one-third of its engineering workforce comprises women.
This milestone reflects a deliberate and sustained effort by the company to foster gender diversity in traditionally male-dominated industrial sectors such as mining, metallurgy, and energy.
Engineers make up 30% of Vedanta’s total workforce, spanning disciplines like electronics, chemical, petroleum, electrical, metallurgical, mining, thermal, environmental, design, artificial intelligence, data science, renewable energy, and robotics.
Of these engineers, 30% are women—a notable figure in the context of India’s broader industrial landscape.
Strategic Hiring from Premier Institutions
In FY25 alone, Vedanta onboarded over 500 engineers from more than 50 premier institutions across India.
These include Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and reputed private colleges in Jammu & Kashmir and the North-East.
The company’s recruitment strategy emphasizes both technical excellence and diversity, ensuring that women engineers are well represented in its talent pipeline.
The hiring push aligns with Vedanta’s broader goal of building a future-ready workforce equipped to navigate emerging technologies and sustainability challenges.
New-age specializations such as digital analytics, mechatronics, geotechnical engineering, and supply-chain reliability are part of the company’s evolving engineering portfolio.
Women Engineers at the Core of Operations at Vedanta
Women engineers at Vedanta are not confined to support roles—they are actively leading operations at some of the company’s most critical facilities.
At Vedanta Aluminium, they manage the world’s largest aluminium smelters and refineries, ensuring high-quality production and operational efficiency.
At Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta subsidiary, women engineers oversee mining operations using advanced technologies like tele-remote systems, AI/ML-driven solutions, robotics in smelting, and 3D geological mapping.
These roles demand not only technical expertise but also leadership and decision-making capabilities, which Vedanta actively cultivates through mentorship programs, exposure to diverse verticals, and capacity-building initiatives.
Policy Support and Inclusion Measures
Vedanta’s commitment to gender diversity extends beyond hiring.
The company has implemented progressive policies to support women through various life stages.
These include flexible work hours, sabbaticals for childcare, spouse hiring, and a “no questions asked” work-from-home option.
Financial support for education and gender affirmation procedures further reinforces its inclusive approach.
As of March 2025, Vedanta reported 21% women representation in its overall talent pool and 28% in decision-making roles.
The company aims to reach 30% women representation by FY2030, positioning itself as a leader in gender inclusion within the metals and mining industry.
Technology and Innovation as Enablers at Vedanta
Vedanta’s engineering teams, including its women engineers, are deeply involved in deploying cutting-edge technologies.
From drones powered by Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and LiDAR to AI-driven monitoring systems, the company integrates innovation into its core operations.
These tools not only enhance efficiency but also make industrial environments safer and more accessible for all employees.
