NITI Aayog, the Government of India’s apex public policy think tank, has announced the continuation of its Internship Scheme, inviting students and scholars from across the country to apply.

The programme aims to provide first-hand exposure to policy formulation and implementation, while encouraging the infusion of fresh ideas into the governance framework.

Who Can Apply

The scheme is open to Indian nationals currently enrolled in recognized universities or institutions. Eligible candidates include undergraduate students in their second year or above, postgraduate students, and research scholars.

Applicants must be pursuing disciplines that align with NITI Aayog’s mandate, such as economics, law, management, engineering, development studies, social sciences, public policy, or related fields.

Flexible Duration and Structure

Internships are offered throughout the year on a rolling basis, giving students the flexibility to apply at their convenience. The duration ranges from a minimum of six weeks to a maximum of six months.

Selected interns are placed in different verticals, divisions, or cells of NITI Aayog, where they are mentored by senior officials and exposed to real-time policymaking processes.

Learning Experience and Responsibilities

Interns play an active role in ongoing projects and assignments, contributing through research, data analysis, drafting reports, preparing policy briefs, and making presentations.

The scheme emphasizes experiential learning, enabling participants to bridge academic theory with practical governance challenges.

Though the internship is unpaid, successful candidates receive a certificate upon completion, which adds value to their academic and professional journey.

Application and Selection Process

Applications must be submitted online via the NITI Aayog internship portal. Since the process is rolling, candidates can apply at any time of the year.

A selection committee reviews applications based on academic merit, relevance of subject area, and the quality of the statement of purpose.

Candidates are encouraged to articulate their motivation clearly, demonstrating how their skills and interests align with the policy areas of NITI Aayog.

Bridging Academia and Governance

Over the years, the NITI Internship Scheme has emerged as a popular platform for students aspiring to understand governance from within.

It provides participants with a unique opportunity to work closely with policymakers, contribute innovative perspectives, and gain insights into the country’s developmental priorities.

By engaging young minds in real-world policy challenges, NITI Aayog is reinforcing its commitment to building a future-ready nation where informed citizens actively participate in shaping India’s growth trajectory.
