Bengaluru techies test positive for COVID-19

Karnataka has confirmed a few new positive cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) and the government declared a holiday for all primary schools (class 1 to 5) in Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural districts to control the outbreak.

Karnataka’s health minister said he will ask technology companies to stop sending employees on overseas assignments, unless it is an emergency, as the state capital recorded three new cases of the Covid-19 infection on Tuesday.

The move could trigger business disruption for Bengaluru’s IT companies that generate over a third of India’s software exports of $ 147 billion. The state health department has also sought details on employees who have travelled to Covid-19- affected countries since February 21.

Dell Technologies India President and Managing Director Alok Ohrie in an internal note confirmed that an employee of the company had been infected and was in quarantine. The Dell employee returned from a trip to Austin, the US, through Dubai.

Mindtree Chief People Officer Paneesh Rao said in a statement “One of our Mindtree Minds (employees), on return from an overseas trip to Bengaluru, has tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday. He, along with his family members are under the medical supervision of the Karnataka Health Department,”

Karnataka, which now has four confirmed cases of Covid-19, the primary source of infections has been engineers employed by technology firms, who returned to the city from business trips to the US in the first week of March.
