Degree or Expertise: Will Google Career Certificates Disrupt the Hiring?

If you don’t have a degree, and looking for a Job in IT, or Technology roles, now Google will help you to get yourself skilled. Recently, Google Inc. has started enrolments for its latest Google Career Certificates in data analytics, project management, and user experience (UX) design.

The shift from degrees to expertise – enticing it may well be- has long been debated without much headway. 82% of Google IT Support Professional Certificate completers in the U.S. report a positive career outcome like a new job, enhanced skills, promotion, or raise within 6 months.

In the United States; Accenture, Infosys, Cognizant, Intel, Deloitte, etc are the top companies among the 130 employers that will be hiring people based on Google Career Certificates over the next two years rather than their degree.

Now, in an effort to bridge the prevailing skills gap in India, technology giant Google Inc. has also started enrolments for its latest Google Career Certificates in data analytics, project management, and user experience (UX) design.

Career Certificates are aimed at helping some of India’s largest employers upskill their workforce, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet Inc. said in a blog post on 11 March.

Sunder Pichai said, “To help, today we’re announcing new efforts, including opening up enrollment for our latest career certificates, expanding our employer consortium, and introducing new tools to improve the job search.”

Google IT Support Professional Certificate– Prepare for an entry-level job as an IT support specialist. In this program, you’ll learn the fundamentals of operating systems and networking, and how to troubleshoot problems using code to ensure computers run correctly.

Google IT Automation Professional Certificate- This is an advanced program for learners who have completed the Google IT Support Professional Certificate.

Globally, Google is sponsoring 100,000 scholarships for its career certificates in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. “In India, we’re working to make certificates more accessible and launch an employer consortium,” Pichai said.

“We’re also working with various job sites — including Glassdoor, LinkedIn, ZipRecruiter, Snagajob, and CareerBuilder — and US employers to make education and experience requirements clearer on job postings,” Pichai said.

The certificate courses come at a time when, according to the World Economic Forum, 50 percent of all employees need to be reskilled by 2025.
