Indian government has announced a series of measures aimed at enhancing social security coverage for over 380 million unorganised workers.

These initiatives are part of a broader effort to ensure ease of living and financial stability for a significant portion of the workforce that often lacks formal employment benefits.

Expanding Coverage and Integration of Data

The Labour and Employment Ministry plans to introduce a common application form on the e-Shram portal, which will enable unorganised workers to access benefits from at least 12 social security schemes based on their eligibility.

The ministry also aims to target the enrolment of gig and platform workers through a dedicated module on the e-Shram portal.

To ensure that benefits reach the last mile worker, the government is working on integrating data on building and construction workers with the e-Shram portal.

This integration will help in better analysis and distribution of benefits.

Additionally, the ministry has issued an advisory to all platform aggregators to register themselves and their workers on the e-Shram portal.

This step is crucial for extending social security benefits to gig and platform workers, who are expected to number 23.5 million by 2029-30.

Social Security of Unorganised Workers: Labour Reforms

The government is also focusing on implementing labour codes by 2025 to boost social security for informal workers.

These reforms include measures such as single registration, single return, and a firm-based common license with a five-year validity.

The aim is to create a more inclusive and resilient workforce that can contribute meaningfully to the nation’s growth story.

Union Minister of Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, emphasized the government’s commitment to building a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready workforce.

The ministry has achieved significant milestones in enhancing IT systems of EPFO and ESIC, enabling prompt and efficient resolution of grievances for millions of beneficiaries.
