Hyundai Motor Company has announced a formal investigation into the employment practices of its suppliers and subcontractors following a major immigration enforcement action at a car battery facility under construction in Georgia, United States.

The raid, conducted by U.S. authorities in early September, resulted in the detention of hundreds of workers, none of whom were directly employed by Hyundai.

The facility in question is part of Hyundai’s Metaplant America project, a large-scale manufacturing site in Bryan County, Georgia.

The incident has prompted Hyundai to reassess oversight mechanisms across its supply chain, particularly in relation to labor compliance and contractor accountability.

Statement Emphasizes Corporate Responsibility and Legal Compliance

In a public statement, Hyundai reiterated its commitment to lawful employment practices and responsible corporate conduct.

“We take our responsibility as a corporate citizen seriously, and incidents like this remind us of the importance of robust oversight throughout our entire supply chain and contractor network,” the company said.

Hyundai clarified that while the detained workers were not its direct employees, it expects all partners—including suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors—to comply fully with U.S. labor and immigration laws.

The company emphasized that the safety and dignity of everyone working at its sites remain a top priority.

Hyundai Governance Shift at Georgia Megasite

As part of its response, Hyundai has appointed Chris Susock as Chief Manufacturing Officer for North America. He will assume governance of the entire Georgia megasite.

Chris will oversee compliance efforts at the Georgia megasite.

He will also lead the internal investigation to ensure that all employment practices meet legal and ethical standards.

The company is reviewing its internal processes for vetting suppliers and contractors. It is placing particular focus on employment verification and documentation.

This includes strengthening protocols to prevent future violations and ensure consistent enforcement across projects.
