New Jersey Alleges Civil Rights Violations by Amazon

The State of New Jersey has filed a lawsuit against Amazon, accusing the e-commerce giant of discriminating against pregnant and disabled warehouse workers by denying legally mandated workplace accommodations.

The complaint, filed by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office in Essex County Superior Court, alleges that Amazon routinely failed to provide reasonable adjustments such as relief from heavy lifting, modified schedules, or temporary reassignment to lighter duties.

Attorney General Matthew Platkin stated, “Put simply, Amazon has exploited pregnant workers and workers with disabilities in its New Jersey warehouses. In building a trillion-dollar business, Amazon has flagrantly violated their rights.”

The lawsuit follows an investigation into dozens of Amazon facilities across the state and claims the company engaged in a “pattern or practice of discrimination” that contravenes New Jersey’s Law Against Discrimination (LAD).

Accommodation Requests Allegedly Met with Retaliation or Termination

According to the complaint, Amazon not only denied accommodation requests but also retaliated against employees who sought them.

The state alleges that workers were often placed on unpaid leave after requesting accommodations.

In some cases, they were terminated within days of making such requests.

Examples cited include pregnant employees who asked for reduced lifting duties or more frequent breaks. In response, some were removed from active schedules or dismissed.

Similarly, workers with disabilities who requested modified tasks were allegedly sidelined or pressured to resign.

The lawsuit claims these actions created a hostile work environment and discouraged employees from asserting their rights under state law.

Response from Amazon and Broader Legal Context

Amazon has responded to the allegations, stating that it does not tolerate discrimination and that it provides accommodations in accordance with applicable laws.

The company emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive workplace and said it would review the complaint thoroughly.

New Jersey has taken its second legal action against Amazon in the same week, signaling increased scrutiny of the company’s labor practices.

The lawsuit adds to a growing list of legal challenges Amazon faces across the U.S. related to worker safety, unionization efforts, and employment conditions.

Impact on Warehouse Operations and Employee Advocacy

Amazon operates multiple fulfillment centers across New Jersey. These centers employ thousands of workers who are essential to its logistics and delivery network.

The lawsuit could significantly impact how the company manages its workforce. This is especially relevant in high-demand environments where physical labor is intensive.

Worker advocacy groups have welcomed the legal action. They view it as a necessary step to hold large corporations accountable for labor rights.

They argue that the case underscores the need for stronger enforcement of workplace protections.

This is particularly important for vulnerable groups such as pregnant individuals and those with disabilities.
