According to a CNBC report, IBM (International Business Machines Corp) initiated layoffs in its marketing and communications division without specifying the number of affected jobs.

Chief Communications Officer Jonathan Adashek allegedly disclosed the decision in a brief 7-minute meeting.

IBM’s CEO, Arvind Krishna, previously stated plans to pause hiring for roles susceptible to automation, citing AI advancements. He projected, “I could easily see 30% of that getting replaced by AI and automation over a five-year period.”

These remarks align with IBM’s strategy amid reports of layoffs in departments like marketing and communications.

IBM’s CFO, James Kavanaugh, indicated in January that the company anticipates spending a similar amount on restructuring as the previous year, totaling $400 million. This expenditure coincided with a reduction of approximately 3,900 jobs within IBM’s workforce during that period.

Reportedly, IBM asked employees interested in voluntary redundancy to come forward for layoffs, primarily focusing on European positions.

The initiative, as per The Register, is seen as “transformative” rather than solely financial. Around 80% of the reduction is aimed at Enterprise Operations & Support (EO&S), Q2C missions, and Finance & Operations roles.

As per data from the layoffs.fyi website, at least 204 companies, including IBM, have announced job cuts in 2024. These layoffs have affected a total of 49,978 employees across various industries and sectors.

IBM is a multinational technology company known for its hardware, software, and services. Founded in 1911, IBM has been a pioneer in computing technology, playing a crucial role in shaping the digital landscape.
