Meta Platforms Inc. has announced plans to cut approximately 600 roles within its Superintelligence Labs division, marking a significant shift in its artificial intelligence strategy.

The layoffs will affect several key AI units, including the Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) team, product-related AI groups, and AI infrastructure departments.

Meta made the decision as part of a broader reorganization to make its AI operations more agile and focused.

The company confirmed the move through internal communications, with Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang stating that the restructuring is designed to streamline decision-making and increase the scope and impact of individual roles.

“Fewer team members will allow us to move faster and give each role more responsibility,” Alexandr noted in a memo cited by Axios.

Meta TBD Lab Remains Unaffected Amid Strategic Realignment

Meta clarified that its newly formed TBD Lab will not be impacted, even though the layoffs span several AI-focused teams.

This unit includes a few dozen researchers and engineers.

They are responsible for developing Meta’s next-generation foundation models, including advancements in large language models (LLMs).

The lab plays a central role in Meta’s long-term AI vision and continues to hire actively.

TBD Lab is working on building successors to Meta’s Llama series of open-source LLMs. These models compete with systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

Meta has shielded this unit from cuts to preserve its focus on foundational AI research. At the same time, it is trimming other parts of its AI organization.

Layoffs Reflect Shift Toward Leaner, More Responsive AI Teams

The restructuring reflects Meta’s intent to reduce layers within its AI division and operate with greater responsiveness.

The company believes that a leaner structure will enable faster innovation and better alignment with product goals.

Meta is encouraging affected employees to apply for other roles within the company. Internal sources suggest that many of them may be redeployed to other teams.

Meta’s AI workforce had expanded rapidly in recent years, driven by growing demand for generative AI tools and infrastructure.

However, the company now appears to be recalibrating its approach, focusing on strategic hires and high-impact projects.
