Thousands of Amazon workers across more than 20 countries are gearing up to stage protests and strikes during the peak holiday shopping period, Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The planned demonstrations are part of the global “Make Amazon Pay” campaign, which demands better working conditions, improved workers’ rights, and stronger climate action from the e-commerce giant.

Amazon: Global Protests and Strikes

The “Make Amazon Pay” campaign is organized by a coalition of over 80 trade unions and activist groups, led by UNI Global Union and Progressive International.

Protests are planned in major cities across the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Canada, India, Japan, and Brazil, among others.

The campaign aims to hold Amazon accountable for labor abuses, environmental degradation, and threats to democracy.

The campaign’s demands include fair wages, respect for union rights, tax justice, and environmental sustainability.

In UK, a petition with over 110,000 signatures will be presented to Amazon’s headquarters in London on Black Friday.

The petition urges the government to end tax breaks for large corporations like Amazon.

The GMB union is also organizing an online rally for Amazon workers on the same day.

Amazon’s Response

In response to the planned protests, an Amazon spokesperson stated that the company is always open to feedback and improvement.

However, Amazon emphasized its commitment to providing competitive pay, comprehensive benefits, and a safe work environment for its teams.

The company also highlighted its efforts in renewable energy, claiming to be the world’s largest purchaser of renewable energy.

This marks the fifth year of action by the “Make Amazon Pay” campaign.

Previous protests have included a Black Friday demonstration at Amazon’s Coventry warehouse in the UK. There workers narrowly voted against union recognition.

The campaign continues to gain momentum.

Labor leaders around the world feel increasingly emboldened to challenge large corporations in an era of income inequality.
