A recent report by KPMG has revealed a startling statistic: two-thirds of jobseekers in India have inaccuracies in their CVs.

This report, which analyzed over one million resumes over the past year, highlights the prevalence of misinformation among job applicants across various levels, from entry-level positions to senior roles.

KPMG Report: Prevalence of Misinformation in CV

KPMG report found that 67% of jobseekers had discrepancies in their employment history, including mismatches in employment periods, incorrect job titles, and inflated salaries.

The report also noted that men were more likely to exaggerate job details, while women were more likely to inflate their educational qualifications and skills.

The report highlighted gender differences in the types of misinformation found in CVs.

Men were more likely to exaggerate job titles, salaries, and employment durations, while women were more likely to inflate their educational qualifications, skills, or use fake certifications.

These discrepancies can lead to unfair hiring practices and a lack of trust in the hiring process.

Impact on Hiring Process & Reasons for Misrepresentation

The high level of misinformation in CVs poses significant challenges for recruiters and hiring managers.

With an average of 250 applications per job listing, recruiters often resort to random or hasty selection strategies, leading to genuinely qualified candidates being overlooked.

This trend undermines the reliability of resumes as a tool for assessing a candidate’s suitability for a job.

One of the most common issues identified in the report was the undisclosed reasons for leaving previous jobs.

This included allegations linked to sexual harassment, legal disputes, and conflicts of interest.

Such omissions can have serious implications for both the jobseeker and the hiring company.

To address the issue of misinformation in CVs, the report recommends that companies implement more rigorous verification processes, including background checks and reference checks.

Additionally, jobseekers are encouraged to be honest and transparent in their applications to build trust with potential employers.
