OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently praised the Chinese AI startup DeepSeek for its impressive AI model, DeepSeek R1, which has quickly become the most downloaded free app on Apple’s US App Store.

Sam’s comments came amidst a backdrop of renewed scrutiny over his earlier remarks dismissing the possibility of creating competitive AI models on a small budget.

OpenAI Sam Altman’s Response on DeepSeek’s Breakthrough

DeepSeek, a relatively new player in the AI industry, has managed to develop its chatbot, DeepSeek R1, at a fraction of the cost typically associated with such technologies.

The model was reportedly built and trained for just $5.6 million, compared to the billions spent by tech giants like OpenAI.

This cost-effective approach has stunned the AI community and challenged the traditional narrative of AI development.

In response to DeepSeek’s success, Sam took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to commend the startup.

He described DeepSeek R1 as “an impressive model, particularly around what they’re able to deliver for the price”.

Despite his praise, Sam remained confident in OpenAI’s ability to stay ahead in the AI race.

He stated, “We will obviously deliver much better models and also it’s legit invigorating to have a new competitor! We will pull up some releases”.

OpenAI’s Future Plans

Sam emphasized OpenAI’s commitment to its research roadmap and the importance of increased computational power in achieving future AI breakthroughs.

He reiterated the company’s long-term goal of developing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which aims to surpass human intelligence in most tasks.

Sam’s comments reflect OpenAI’s determination to maintain its competitive edge and continue innovating in the AI space.

DeepSeek’s rapid rise and low-cost production model have raised important questions about the future of generative AI.

Experts argue that the dominance of US tech giants like OpenAI and Google may soon be contested by more affordable and efficient alternatives.

The success of DeepSeek R1 has also highlighted the potential for smaller AI startups to make significant contributions to the field.
