According to IBM, as technology continues to advance, an emerging division of labor will lead to the automation of many manual and repetitive tasks, potentially displacing 85 million jobs by 2025. However, 97 million new roles may emerge that are better suited to the evolving work dynamic.

While machines and algorithms handle more routine tasks, human workers will still be essential for tasks that require distinctly human skills such as creativity, emotional intelligence, and complex decision-making.

Essential Soft Skills for Career Resilience

To thrive in the future workforce, cultivating soft skills will be crucial. According to Forbes, key soft skills include critical thinking, decision-making, emotional intelligence, creativity, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

These skills will not only help individuals adapt to technological advancements but also enhance their ability to work effectively with others in increasingly automated environments.

Start your journey toward mastering these skills for free through various online courses and resources to ensure long-term career resilience.

Free Courses by IBM SkillsBuild Program

In today’s tech-driven job market, developing practical skills is essential. IBM aims to address this need by offering free online courses through its SkillsBuild program, targeting groups often underrepresented in the tech industry, including women, veterans, refugees, neurodivergent individuals, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

These courses cover areas like cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data analysis, and information technology. They are designed to be accessible, with many taking less than 10 hours to complete.

For instance, “Cybersecurity Fundamentals” introduces key concepts such as cyber-attacks, cryptography, and security strategies. The course includes case studies and insights into job opportunities, all in just six hours.

Similarly, the nine-hour “Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals” course explores topics like natural language processing, machine learning, and ethical AI, while “Data Fundamentals” (seven hours) delves into data analysis, programming languages, and tools like IBM Watson Studio. The “Information Technology Fundamentals” course provides a comprehensive introduction to IT essentials, from networking to troubleshooting.

Participants gain digital credentials that validate their skills and enhance their resumes. These credentials demonstrate adaptability and the ability to learn, key qualities that employers value in the tech sector.

With over 700,000 cybersecurity positions currently open in the U.S., these courses provide an effective way to prepare for opportunities in a competitive field.
