Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is intensifying efforts under the Skill India Mission (SIM) to equip India’s youth with industry-relevant skills in emerging technologies.
Through a network of training centres and schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS), National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), and Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS) via Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), the initiative aims to make the workforce future-ready.
The focus is on delivering skill, re-skill, and up-skill training across all sections of society, with a strong emphasis on new-age technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Robotics, Electric Vehicles (EVs), and Data Centres.
Skill India Mission: Training Aligned with Industry 4.0
To meet the evolving demands of Industry 4.0, MSDE has taken several targeted steps:
- Under PMKVY, over 200 job roles in future skills have been aligned with market needs. As of June 30, 2025, 4,32,712 candidates have been trained in areas such as AI/ML, Mechatronics, Drone Technology, and EVs.
- Through NAPS, 31,750 apprentices have been trained in 69 trades related to future technologies, offering hands-on experience in real-world settings.
- The Directorate General of Training (DGT) has introduced 31 new courses in ITIs and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs), covering domains like 5G networks, Cybersecurity, and Drone Technology. Between 2022 and 2024, 52,882 candidates completed training under CTS.
These efforts reflect a strategic shift toward technology-driven skilling, ensuring that India’s workforce remains competitive in global markets.
Industry Partnerships and Infrastructure Expansion
To strengthen industry linkages, the Directorate General of Training (DGT) has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with leading tech companies.
These include IBM, CISCO, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, and Future Skill Rights Network.
These collaborations, often under CSR initiatives, help provide access to modern tools, mentorship, and real-world applications of technical skills.
Additionally, the Indian Institutes of Skills (IIS) in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, established under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode, are offering advanced training with cutting-edge infrastructure.
These institutes aim to create a pool of industry-ready professionals equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise.
Job Placement and Career Pathways
Placement tracking has been a key component of PMKVY’s earlier phases (1.0 to 3.0), with 24.38 lakh candidates reported placed between 2015 and 2022.
Under PMKVY 4.0, the focus has shifted to empowering candidates to explore diverse career paths through orientation and digital tools.
The Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH) plays a central role in this transformation.
SIDH integrates skilling, education, employment, and entrepreneurship into a unified digital platform, offering lifelong access to services.
It connects trained candidates with potential employers and provides access to jobs, apprenticeships, and entrepreneurial opportunities.
Rozgar Melas and Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Melas (PMNAMs) are being organized on a regular basis.
These events enable certified candidates to directly engage with hiring organizations for placement opportunities.
