HCL Technologies (HCLTech), India’s third-largest software exporter, is rolling out a new policy that directly links employee leaves to their attendance in the office.

As companies seek to bring employees back to the campus after the pandemic, HCLTech’s move aims to implement a three-day work-from-office model. Let’s dive into the specifics of this policy and its implications.

The “No Office, No Leaves” Policy by HCLTech

  • Attendance Requirement: Employees at HCLTech must be physically present in the office for at least three days a week and a minimum of 12 days a month.
  • Leave Deduction: If an employee fails to meet these attendance requirements, their leaves will be deducted for each day they are absent.

Background and Context

HCLTech transitioned to a hybrid work model five months ago, allowing employees to work remotely part of the time. Some employees express concerns about potential loss of pay once their leaves are exhausted under this new policy.

An HCLTech spokesperson said as per the outlet, “Our hybrid work policy provides flexibility where people in middle and senior level management follow any 3-days a week work from office arrangement which supports collaboration. All other employees follow the working arrangements as necessary to meet the client commitments and these are planned by the respective managers.”

Earlier C Vijayakumar, CEO and MD, HCLTech said that the company had no such plans to “link variable compensation with bringing people to office,” unlike Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) which linked its quarterly variable pay component to the employee’s attendance in office in April.

IT Industry Trends

While IT services companies initially embraced remote work, many now believe office attendance boosts social capital, especially for freshers entering the workforce. Collaborative projects and better collaboration are cited as reasons for encouraging employees to return to the office.
