Hyderabad IT Firms Shift to WFH Amid Heavy Rainfall Warnings

IT companies across Hyderabad have transitioned to work-from-home (WFH) arrangements to ensure employee safety and maintain business continuity.

The move comes after the Telangana government and local authorities issued advisories urging firms to minimize employee movement, particularly in the city’s IT corridors such as HiTech City and the Financial District.

The IMD has placed Hyderabad under an orange alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall from August 13 to August 15.

In anticipation of potential waterlogging and traffic disruptions, the Telangana Information Technology Department advised IT and ITES companies to facilitate remote work wherever feasible.

Industry Bodies Relay Government Advisories

Key industry associations, including the Hyderabad Software Enterprises Association (HYSEA) and Nasscom, played a central role in disseminating the government’s advisory to member companies.

HYSEA officials confirmed that emails were sent early Wednesday morning recommending WFH for August 13 and 14, following advisories received from the IT department the previous night.

Nasscom echoed the message, urging companies to prioritize employee safety and adhere to the government’s guidance.

“We advised our member companies to ask their employees to follow the advisories issued by the authorities for Wednesday and Thursday,” a Nasscom representative stated.

Hyderabad Traffic Eases as IT Hubs Empty Out

The impact of the WFH shift was immediately visible on Hyderabad’s roads.

Areas typically congested during weekday mornings, such as the Financial District and HiTech City, saw significantly reduced traffic.

“The roads are usually packed on Wednesday mornings, especially with hybrid workers choosing to come in midweek. But today, the traffic was fantastic,” said an IT professional commuting to the Financial District.

Some companies permitted employees to report to the office in the morning.

However, they were asked to return home by lunchtime due to deteriorating weather and fresh alerts from local authorities.

Cyberabad Police and SCSC Coordinate Safety Measures

Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty chaired a virtual meeting with over 100 IT industry leaders and stakeholders.

He also serves as the head of the Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC), which coordinated the session.

He advised companies to extend remote work arrangements into Thursday to prioritize employee safety.

This measure was aimed at preventing disruptions and supporting efficient emergency response efforts.

The Cyberabad Traffic Police issued advisories recommending early logouts starting at 3 PM on August 12.

These guidelines were especially directed at employees working evening shifts to ease traffic and ensure safer commutes.

The goal was to reduce congestion and facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles during peak rainfall hours.
