Google Offers Voluntary Exit to US Platforms & Devices Team

Tech giant Google has introduced a voluntary exit programme for its Platforms & Devices team, which includes employees working on Pixel, Android, Chrome, ChromeOS, Fitbit, Google Photos, Google One, and Nest.

Google’s move comes amid broader cost-cutting measures in the tech industry, with several companies implementing layoffs and restructuring efforts.

The US Department of Justice is also considering forcing Google to divest its Android and Chrome businesses amid monopolisation allegations.

This context adds to the significance of the voluntary exit programme. It serves as a strategic response to both internal and external pressures.

Google Voluntary Exit Programme Details

The voluntary exit programme is aimed at US-based employees within the Platforms & Devices division.

Senior Vice President Rick Osterloh sent a memo to employees announcing the programme, which offers a severance package to those who choose to leave.

The programme is designed to address employee feedback about past layoffs.

It also provides an option for those who feel disconnected from the company’s mission or are struggling with their roles.

Last year, Google merged its Pixel and Android projects into the Platforms & Devices division to streamline the integration of AI features across services and products.

This restructuring has led to significant momentum within the team.

The voluntary exit programme is intended to ensure that everyone is deeply committed to building great products with speed and efficiency.

Impact of the Programme and Employee Feedback

The programme is not applicable to other groups such as AI or Search. Details about the severance package have not been fully disclosed yet.
