Diversity is now a priority for companies even for campus hiring

According to a TOI report, the companies are increasingly pushing on diversity among freshers/campus hires. The firms including Cognizant, Accenture, Capgemini, Intel, and PayPal, etc are educating hiring managers on diversity – of gender, sexual orientation, and physical ability.

While merit and performance remain key criteria in assessment, it’s time for businesses to take a closer look at the hiring process to remove hidden barriers standing in the way of diversity and inclusion goals, with respect to women, people with special needs, and LGBT Candidates.

Intel India is committed to advancing diversity at every level of the organization. Its 30-40% of the diversity target comes from campus hiring and internship programs.

Capgemini, aiming for equal opportunity and dignity at work for all has introduced a Gender Balance Hiring Program which ensures that its campus interview panels are diverse and trained to acknowledge and address their own biases. Currently, the company employs 125,000 people in India.

Cognizant has achieved gender diversity at junior levels by consciously inviting institute that promotes it, a third of the colleges identified under the company’s skill development and internship program are women-only. Nearly half of the hires from the 2021 graduating batch are female and women now form around 38% of the company’s overall workforce in India and approaching 50% in tier-2 cities.

At the entry-level—across IT and Operations—about 50 percent of annual hires have been women for the past three years.

Accenture says, equality is not just a priority; it’s essential to how we operate. The company offers internships for trans people. Accenture LGBTI allies and Human Resources provide support and help them feel more comfortable.

PayPal says it has more than doubled the number of women in leadership since 2010, and currently, nearly half of its global workforce (42%) are women. Recently, the company has launched a program ‘Girls in Tech’ to give young girls a hands-on experience and understanding of Technology for 500 women students.

The transgender community is slowly finding a place in mainstream employment. Several companies including KPMG, Infosys  Accenture, Nestaway, and Sodexo have introduced policies as well as hiring plans to ease the transition of the marginalized community into the formal workplace.

ThoughtWorks has a six-month internship program for all LGBTQIA+ candidates.
