The UK government announced a highly pivotal policy wherein employees can request for flexible working from the first day of their employment. This rule is intended to provide employees with flexible working, job sharing, and effective work-life balance.

Employers need to implement this policy in their employment. In case they cannot accommodate this request made by employees, they need to discuss and create an alternative option before rejecting this request.

In the UK, this HR intervention by the government will enable the workforce and the community to have better and more favorable working conditions.

Advantages to employees due to flexible working from the first day of their employment:

  • Work-life balance
  • Inclusive employment
  • More number of women in workplaces
  • Higher motivation at work

Peter Cheese, chief executive of CIPD (the professional body for people development) exclaimed “We are delighted that the government is bringing in the day-one right to request flexible working. We have been calling for this change as it will help create fairer, more inclusive workplaces and improve access to flexible jobs for many people.”

This opportunity will also enable older workers, employees with caregiving responsibilities, and employees having unstable health conditions to benefit from this.

Organizations are going to highly benefit from this policy as a more diverse set of talent pool can be attracted to the workplace due to the immense flexibility offered by employers as a result of government intervention.
