Mercedes-Benz India gets Dr. Shyam Sunder for External Affairs

Mercedes-Benz India, the country’s premier luxury car manufacturer, has recently undergone an organizational change. The change is within its External Affairs and Corporate Citizenship function.

Effective August 26, 2024, the company has appointed Dr. Shyam Sunder to the pivotal role of Head of External Affairs and Corporate Citizenship.

In this capacity, Shyam will play a crucial role in shaping the company’s external relations. Other verticals include public policy advocacy and community-building initiatives.

Key Responsibilities at Mercedes-Benz India

As the Head of External Affairs and Corporate Citizenship, Dr. Shyam Sunder will report directly to Santosh Iyer, the Managing Director & CEO of Mercedes-Benz India. His responsibilities include:

Government Relations: Shyam will lead efforts to foster close collaboration with policymakers. He will be ensuring that Mercedes-Benz’s interests are effectively represented in relevant forums.

Public Policy Advocacy: He will actively engage in shaping public policy, and advocating for industry-friendly regulations. He will also be contributing to the overall development of the automotive sector.

Community Building: Shyam will work to build stronger communities through Mercedes-Benz’s diverse corporate citizenship programs. These initiatives aim to make a positive impact beyond business operations, emphasizing social responsibility and sustainability.

In the press release the company said, “We are delighted to welcome Dr. Shyam Sunder as the Head of External Affairs and Corporate Citizenship at Mercedes-Benz India.”

They added, “His extensive experience and deep understanding of external affairs will be invaluable in conveying our views to policymakers and actively participating in various industry associations.”

“Dr. Shyam’s expertise aligns with our commitment to fostering close collaboration with policymakers, and external shareholders, and driving impactful corporate social initiatives at Mercedes-Benz,” the release stated.

Dr. Shyam Sunder brings a wealth of experience to his new position. He holds a master’s degree in Econometrics and a Ph.D. in Economics, reflecting his strong academic background. 

Over the course of his impressive 24-year career, he has held pivotal roles. These were related to driving public policy, advocacy, and government engagements at prominent automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

His expertise extends beyond the corporate sphere, as he has also collaborated with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI).

Dr. Shyam Sunder has extensive expertise in public affairs and strategic stakeholder engagements. This uniquely positions him to navigate the intricate regulatory landscapes that impact the automotive industry. 

His background in shaping public policy and fostering industry collaborations underscores his adeptness in managing external affairs.
