Infosys, one of India’s leading IT giants, recently made headlines when it sent out final offer letters to over 2,000 freshers from the 2022 batch.

However, amidst the celebrations, approximately 700 campus hires are still waiting eagerly for their joining dates.

These candidates, who have successfully cleared pre-training assessments, belong to two critical roles: System Engineers (SE) and Digital Specialist Engineers (DSE).

The Long Wait

For these 700 freshers, the wait has been prolonged—stretching over two years. While their peers received offer letters back in 2022, the actual onboarding process remained elusive due to industry-wide challenges.

The IT sector faced uncertainties, including fears of a recession in major markets and reduced discretionary spending. Consequently, companies, including Infosys, paused hiring, leading to a decline in headcount across the industry.

The Roles in Question

The affected candidates fall into two categories:

System Engineers (SE): Around 500 SE roles were earmarked for the 2022 batch. These aspiring engineers have already completed two pre-training sessions, the latest being in August 2024.

Digital Specialist Engineers (DSE): Approximately 200 DSE candidates from the 2023 batch are also awaiting their joining dates. Interestingly, these DSE candidates secured their positions after excelling in the advanced “HackWithInfy” competition during their third year of their four-year engineering degree.

The Infosys Onboarding Dilemma & Its Impact

The delay in onboarding has left many candidates frustrated. They wonder why they are repeatedly asked to undergo assessments when they have already demonstrated their coding skills and passed exams during pre-training.

The assessment process included two coding tests and around 25 multiple-choice questions. Some candidates allege that certain freshers who received offer letters haven’t even attended assessments after completing pre-training sessions.

The delay in joining dates has several implications:

For these freshers, the uncertainty surrounding their career trajectory remains unsettling. They eagerly await the opportunity to contribute to real-world projects and gain practical experience.

Many of these candidates have been preparing for their professional lives, and the delay impacts their financial planning. The gap between receiving an offer letter and actually joining the workforce can strain personal finances.

While Infosys is at the forefront of this situation, it’s essential to recognize that this delay is not unique to the company. The entire IT industry grappled with hiring challenges during the economic downturn.

Infosys Responds

As of September 3, 2024, Infosys sent joining dates to approximately 1,000 freshers from the 2022 campus hires.

These are primarily candidates who completed their pre-training in July 2024. However, the remaining 700 freshers continue to wait for their turn.

Recently, Infosys CEO Salil Parekh indicated that offers given to freshers would be honoured by the company and followed with joining, although there has been some change in dates.

“Every offer that we have given, that offer will be someone who will join the company. We changed some dates but beyond that everyone will join Infosys and there is no change in that approach,” Sahil had said.

Pune-based IT employee union NITES had earlier filed a request to the Ministry of Labour & Employment to investigate the company for the “exploitation and unprofessional treatment” of 2,000 engineering graduates, who were selected for SE and DSE roles during the 2022-23 recruitment drive.
