Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, has taken a groundbreaking step in enhancing its digital services.
By introducing Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) for Universal Account Number (UAN) generation and activation through the UMANG mobile app, EPFO aims to provide a seamless, contactless, and secure experience for millions of its members.
This initiative marks a significant leap in simplifying processes and ensuring greater accessibility to EPFO services.
EPFO Face Authentication: The Need for Digital Transformation
Historically, employers primarily managed UAN generation and activation, often causing errors in personal details such as names, mobile numbers, and dates of birth.
These inaccuracies caused delays in claim processing and limited access to EPFO services.
In the fiscal year 2024-25, members activated only 35% of the 1.26 crore UANs issued, revealing inefficiencies in the existing system.
To address these challenges, EPFO has introduced a direct and user-friendly method for UAN generation and activation.
This new approach eliminates the need for employer intervention, empowering employees to independently manage their UANs using the UMANG app combined with the AadhaarFaceRD app.
How the Process Works
The new system leverages Aadhaar-based face authentication to ensure 100% identity validation. Here’s a step-by-step guide to the process:
- Download the Apps: Users need to install the UMANG app and the AadhaarFaceRD app from the Play Store.
- Navigate to UAN Services: Open the UMANG app and select “UAN Allotment and Activation” under UAN services.
- Enter Aadhaar Details: Input the Aadhaar number and the mobile number linked to it.
- Provide Consent: Tick the checkbox for consent and validate the OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Capture Live Photo: The device’s camera captures a live photo and matches it with Aadhaar records.
- Receive UAN: Once verified, the UAN is generated and sent via SMS. The UAN is auto-activated, allowing users to download their e-UAN card instantly.
